I went to the recent Motörhead show, even though I felt like a fraud because I only know three Motörhead songs. You're saying, okay, Ace Of Spades and what else? I know Ace Of Spades, R.A.M.O.N.E.S., and The Game, which doesn't really count because they didn't write it, and I didn't expect them to play it. It's a theme song for a wrestler, and the Cowboy told me they didn't even play it when they played at WWF New York. If they're not going to play the wrestling song at the wrestling restaurant, they're not going to play it at all. Wait...I guess I also know I Ain't No Nice Guy, but I prefer not to think about that.
I was super excited for the show because I got really good parking. Street parking, less than two blocks from the rock club. What luck! My excitement lasted until I went inside. It was packed with people who were much taller and scarier than myself. A goodly portion of them were also smelly. Oh, yay. But I made the rounds anyway, having a look for people I know. Within five minutes, I had run into four people I know. I told them all the same thing. "Everyone is big and scary!" The universal reply was, "Duh. It's Motörhead." Oh, yeah.
Somewhere along the line I got really bored. I had gotten there an hour and a half before the Motörhead set time. I figured I could kill time until then, but the Motörhead show had turned into a bad cocktail party. Even though I easily knew fifteen people there, I had run out of people to chat with, which is how I wound up sitting through the Morbid Angel set.
After Morbid Angel I ran smack into Aaaahj. He had also run out of people to talk to, so he came by to visit. Yay! One of the Record Store Cuties wanted to talk to me! I'm popular! (This predates the era of Aaaahj being a Rocksnob, and I was surprised he wanted to chat.) And then, who appeared but Mr. E! I love Mr. E! He told us all about his really bad day, which mostly involved poor service at the office supply superstore.
And then it was time for Motörhead. Finally. And, well, it was what you would expect. LCG and I often have a debate about the difference between having a sound, and having all your songs sound the same. AC/DC, for instance, has a sound. Korn, well, all their songs sound the same. With Motörhead, they manage to achieve both. So it didn't technically matter that I only knew three songs, because since I know at least one Motörhead song, I know them all.
Fortunately, they do write a pretty good song. And I was getting much enjoyment from Lemmy, who, as always, was wearing a western shirt and frighteningly tight black jeans. And then, imagine my shock and delight, they actually played R.A.M.O.N.E.S. That is my favorite Motörhead song! I first heard it on Z-Rock when I was a freshman in high school and it ruled! And Motörhead played it! I was like, well, teenage flashback accomplished, I'm ready to go.
But of course I stayed, because to not stay for the Ace Of Spades encore would be wrong. I would be doing a disservice to rock and roll. So I stayed through the encore. And you know I'd love to tell you what the songs were, but I have no idea. I can tell you that at least one of them was the Ace Of Spades, and the rest of them sounded just like the Ace Of Spades.
