I got an email about the parentheses list, and the best thing about it (other than its accuracy) is the fact that it contains a parenthetical digression.
Upon further inspection of Queen songs that contained parentheses I found you had forgotten a few. (Now I'm not sure if you don't like the songs or what.)
Life Is Real (Song for Lennon)
Rock It (Prime Jive)
Las Palabras de Amor (The Words of Love)
Gimme The Prize (Kurgan's Theme)
No One But You (Only the Good Die Young)
-Megala
Yep. We definitely missed some Queen songs on the list. But Rock It (Prime Jive)? I thought sure that was on the list. I thought about it and wondered if it had accidentally been omitted. The original handwritten list was not started on a blank notebook page and by the time we were done the sheet was pretty messy, so when I transferred the list to the computer at least one song disappeared.
Then there was all kinds of cutting and pasting going on as I alphabetized the list (by parenthetical content) so it was possible that a song got cut and never pasted. I think that is what happened to (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction. It was on the original list, but after I posted the final list people wanted to know how we had missed (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction. Um, I don't know, but it was there at some point!
But I remember Rock It (Prime Jive) in the notebook so vividly that I couldn't imagine it had gone missing. The Pirate was the one who had written it down and I thought it looked really goofy because he had written it in all lower case, meaning there were all kinds of dots in the title. When I write a lower case J or I, I do not dot the letter. According to The March Of The Black Queen, the Black Queen does not dot the letter I so I believe that I am right in style. However, the Pirate does dot those letters, making the title Rock It (Prime Jive) look even worse than usual. I was giddy when I crossed it off the list and placed it in the computer. The capital J meant a tidier list!
So I finally got around to checking the posted list, and Rock It (Prime Jive) is present after all. But the other four songs are definitely unaccounted for. The night we started making the list, we thought it was most important to get all of the Queen songs written down first. We named them off by memory, and then the Pirate fetched up all of his Queen CDs to make sure we hadn't missed any. At the time he did not own Hot Space, which is the reason Life Is Real (Song for Lennon) and Las Palabras de Amor (The Words of Love) are missing.
The title No One But You (Only the Good Die Young) didn't even register with me. I don't know that song. That is because it is on Rocks, Vol. 1. Even though Mr. E my fabulous record store guy was carrying it on LP, I never made that purchase. It looked like a weak collection to me. It is also on Greatest Hits, Vol. 3, which is just an icky concept and something I would never buy. The song is also on the soundtrack for the musical We Will Rock You, but I still haven't decided if I approve of that musical venture so of course I have not heard the soundtrack. Therefore, the song is not on the list.
Gimme The Prize (Kurgan's Theme) is causing me much more confusion. I looked on the back of the LP, and it has no parentheses. But on the inner sleeve, it does have parentheses. In the end I chalked it up to the fact that the Pirate did not own A Kind Of Magic at the time.
Ring!
Pirate: Hello?
Me: So, we missed four Queen songs on the parentheses list.
Pirate: How is that possible?
(Insert much longer version of the above explanation because we also had to talk about hockey and The Simpsons.)
Me: ...and you didn't have A Kind Of Magic at the time.
Pirate: Yes I did.
Me: Um. Really?
Pirate: I think that on the CD it is listed as Gimme The Prize dash Kurgan's Theme, which may be why we left it off. Or maybe we had a ridiculous rule. Remember how Teo Torriatte almost didn't make the list because we thought it might be a translation of let us cling together in which case it wouldn't be a true parenthetical title?
Me: Oh yeah.
Pirate: So maybe Gimme The Prize isn't on there because it doesn't always have parentheses.
Me: Are you aware that there are nine songs on the Flash Gordon soundtrack with parentheses?
Pirate: Nine?
Me: Yeah. We missed those too.
So even though we tried our best to make sure no Queen songs were overlooked, there were thirteen Queen songs that were overlooked. Twelve if your rule states that Gimme The Prize doesn't count.
